Happy Aerial-Versary!

Happy Aerial-versary to me! It’s been 3 years since I started my aerial journey and it has been quite the ride. Year 3 started off with a high. I performed for the first time overcoming stage fright and gaining confidence from the experience. I planned future performances and hoped to advance to the next level of silks classes.

Exactly a week after the performance, I sustained an injury that grounded me for an extended period of time. As I was on DL for 6 months of this year, I debated if this year was even worth mentioning. Nothing that I planned for myself came into fruition. However, I came back from a less than straightforward shoulder injury and returned to the activity that I love, so it is worth noting. We need to celebrate our wins, no matter how big or small they may be. It hasn’t been the easiest re-entry. There have been several setbacks- some physical and the majority psychological. So many of my friends & classmates have progressed, performed, and achieved the goals that I had set for myself. Although I am happy for them, it has been hard to accept that I can’t have what they have, at least not right now. Those are the key words with this – right now. I’m not throwing in the towel on these goals just yet. I just need reminders from time to time to be patient with myself. Accepting limitations, especially physical is a hard pill to swallow, when you have never been anything but healthy and athletic. One of my wise teachers/friends told me to think of this route as an alternative path. I may get there- just in my own way and with my own time frame.

Since I have been back, I have tried new things.

I have fallen in love with a new apparatus and moved to the next level of classes.

I have also moved up a level in trapeze.

First aerial class after 6 months off- June 19, 2018

Although my first love is taking a back seat at the moment, I know it will be there for me when I am ready.

I don’t even want to venture a guess to what year 4 will have in store. It’s been a 2 steps forward, 1 step back kind of year. I am just happy to be moving forward. I am hoping the following quote is true for me: “Every setback is set up for even greater comeback.”
